HEADSHOT PREPARATION
Preparing for your headshot shoot involves a bit of planning and attention to detail but it will help you to look and feel your best on the day. Here are some tips to help you get ready:

1. KNOW THE PURPOSE OF YOUR HEADSHOT
-
What’s Your Why?: Are these for a professional profile, acting portfolio, or social media? Your purpose will guide the style, outfit and expression.
-
Let’s Talk!: We can discuss your goals, style preferences and any specific looks you want to achieve. Don’t be afraid to share any fears or anxieties you may have.
2. GROOMING AND SKINCARE
-
Skincare Routine: Start a good skincare routine at least a week before your shoot. Cleanse well and use a good moisturiser to ensure your skin looks fresh! Tip - avoid anything too oily, particularly on the day to avoid being too ‘shiny’!
-
Avoid New Products: Don’t try new skincare products or treatments right before the shoot just in case of potential reactions.
-
Hair: Get a haircut about a week before the shoot for a fresh but natural look. Style your hair in a way that feels most like you.*
-
Men: Shave or groom facial hair neatly on the day of, or the night before the shoot. Bring grooming tools if needed for touch-ups.*
*For studio shoots feel free to bring any electric styling tools you wish.
3. WARDROBE SELECTION
-
Choose classic, well-fitting outfits: Select outfits that fit well, are clean and free of wrinkles. The best colours are those that you feel best in; there are no right or wrongs, so choose what makes you feel good, including bold patterns! Consider bringing a couple of varying options so you can change if necessary. If you are envisioning a particular colour scheme please specify this on your booking form.
-
Necklines Matter: Choose necklines that complement your face shape. V-necks can elongate, while crewnecks can add balance.
-
Layers Add Dimension: Consider blazers, jackets, or cardigans to add depth and variety to your look.

4. MAKEUP AND GROOMING FOR WOMEN
-
Natural Makeup: Aim for a natural makeup look that enhances your features. Avoid heavy contouring unless it’s your usual style.
-
Bring Essentials: Bring touch-up products like powder and lipstick/lipgloss.
5. REST AND HYDRATION
-
Get Enough Sleep: Rest well the night before to avoid tired eyes and puffy skin.
-
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your shoot for clear skin and bright eyes!
6. PRACTICE POSES AND EXPRESSIONS
-
Practice in the Mirror: Get comfortable with your angles, smiles, and expressions. Natural, relaxed expressions usually work best. If you have a ‘best side’ please feel free to share this with me.
-
Relax Your Shoulders and Posture: If your body is relaxed, you’ll feel more relaxed which always makes for a better shot!
7. THE DAY OF THE SHOOT
-
Eat Light: Have a light meal to avoid feeling bloated or sluggish.
-
Bring Essentials: Bring items like a hairbrush, lip balm, and any last-minute grooming tools.
-
Arrive On Time and Relaxed: Arrive a little early to settle in and get comfortable with the setting/studio.
8. MINDSET AND CONFIDENCE
-
Trust: Your shoot is a creative collaboration; I will work hard to help you feel at ease so that you can enjoy being in front of the camera. I will offer guidance when needed but your input and ideas are welcomed and if something doesn’t work, we’ll try something different.
-
Relax: A positive mindset and feeling relaxed will reflect in your photos. Take deep breaths and enjoy the process!
